Handrail Adjustment Sunbury-on-Thames
The team here at Nightingale Joinery recently undertook a task requiring a handrail adjustment for a school in Sunbury-on-Thames. Part of the structure utilises an elegant Grade II Listed Building. The main staircase was original to the building.
The core construction was stone with decorative cast-iron balusters. The handrail was a fine wreathed Mahogany. This sat atop the baluster with a very decorative volute over curtail treads.
We were asked by the clients’ surveyor to consider a solution to the problem of the handrail on the main staircase. It was set very low in relation to the walk line. Given it was a high traffic area, this had been a significant concern of the school’s management regarding the students’ safety. There was an additional problem of the baluster were showing signs of movement.
The solution had to be very much in keeping with original elements. After exploring various solutions with the surveyor, it was decided that a new handrail base should be installed underneath the entire length of the existing fitting. This would raise the installation and offer greater protection to those who used it.
The Wreathed Handrail
We crafted the new rail base using Mahogany to match with the existing look. Our team crafted it to follow the existing wreathed handrail in every detail.
The installation required us to remove the existing handrail carefully. This included saving the original castellated handrail bolts for re-use. Many of the balusters were re-fixed into the stone treads with resin. We then fitted the new base followed by the existing handrail.
To finish, everything was then sanded down and French polished. The result provided the school management with a discreet and safe solution to their growing concerns.
